Our Theme

The TESTIMONY of EQUALITY: where do we as individuals stand?

Despite cruel persecution, early Friends were stubbornly determined to demonstrate that in God’s sight, all persons are equal. This belief resulted in Friends through the years having contributed significantly to the creation of a more just society. Where do we stand today?

Our speaker Stefan Mann will describe his own experiences, in both personal and professional life, of hierarchy, privilege and discrimination. Together we shall then explore various forms of discrimination, some seemingly obvious, others more complex. What challenges do we find?

To round off this meeting, Kurt Strauss, who fled Nazi Germany with his family, will share with us his views on equality.

Details of the programme have not yet been finalised but will be published here as soon as they are available.

Meal times are as follows:

Breakfast: 08.30
Lunch: 12.30
Coffee and cake: approx. 15.00
Dinner: 18.30

About Our Guest Speaker

Stefan Mann is a member of Germany Yearly Meeting, living in Konstanz, whose profession as an agricultural socioeconomist takes him across the border into nearby Switzerland. His work, together with his family background, his upbringing, his experiences as a father of three children, his Quaker activities, and his involvement in the German Friends’ aid and development organisation Quäkerhilfe, all combine to give him a wealth of experience in questions of privilege, hierarchy, and inequality.

Stefan's talk and his questions for discussion will encourage us to consider where each of us stands in relation to our testimony to equality. This question has both a personal and a political dimension, each of which will be touched upon during the weekend.

Further contributors will highlight other aspects of our theme in short presentations.
